    You have 340 articles saved in Pocket. You have 180 bookmarks in Raindrop. You have a folder of PDFs you clipped from the web last quarter that you haven't opened since. Somewhere in that pile is the article that would change how you're thinking about your current project. You don't know which one.

    This is the read-it-later graveyard. A 2016 study of 100,000 Pocket users found a median review rate below 13% — users saved articles at 5–10 times the rate they actually reviewed them (Bhatt et al., Computers in Human Behavior, 2016). The gap between save rate and review rate is not a discipline problem. It is an architecture problem. Tools designed to make saving effortless are not designed to make the saved material useful.

    The cognitive science behind this failure is precise. Sweller's cognitive load theory distinguishes between useful cognitive work (germane load, the kind that produces learning) and overhead (extraneous load, the kind that drains working memory without generating knowledge). An accumulating unreviewed save library increases extraneous load — the persistent, low-level awareness that you have 340 saved articles you haven't processed. It feels like debt, because cognitively, it is. Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve compounds the problem: without active review, 80% of what you read in a saved article is forgotten within two weeks, regardless of how useful it seemed at the time (Murre & Dros, PLOS ONE, 2015). Saving doesn't interrupt the forgetting. Only reviewing does.

The integration is the tightest in this evaluation — highlights become first-class Roam blocks, immediately linkable and referenceable. The limitation is total: it works only with Roam Research.

    The Notion Web Clipper saves pages to a Notion database with title, URL, and full content. If you already use Notion as your primary workspace, the save lands where your other work lives. That's the ceiling of its contribution — pages land in Notion and wait for you to do something with them.

Its knowledge infrastructure is nonexistent — there is no spaced repetition, no note integration, no AI layer, and no mechanism to connect what you save today to what you already know.

    The practical workflow from this evaluation: if retention matters — if you want to actually know what you saved — use Readwise Reader as your primary clip destination. The spaced repetition layer is the only architectural feature in this set that actively fights Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve. Pair it with Glasp if you want social discovery to surface what's worth highlighting before you even start. Use Raindrop if you manage a large research archive and retrieval is the primary need. Use Roam Highlighter only if Roam Research is your note tool. Treat Pocket, Evernote, and Notion Web Clipper as what they are: capable inboxes that don't empty themselves.

    Andy Matuschak's observation holds across every tool in this evaluation: "People often save things 'for later' without a clear sense of what 'later' means or what they plan to do with the material." The best tool in this set — Readwise Reader — comes closest to answering that question architecturally. None of them answer it completely. What's missing is a layer that connects what you save on the web to what you've already captured everywhere else — voice notes, text messages, meeting notes, prior research.
